Although their remarks were clearly unwelcome among China officials, U.S. officials asked for the release of writer Liu Xiaobo and called upon the international community to join their condemnation of his arrest.
The American Embassy statement spoke to the outrageous nature of the charges which portray Liu’s freedom of speech as a crime against the state. It also suggested that China should recognize the internationally-held values of human rights. Groups such as Human Rights Watch and others have also called for the prominent Chinese writer’s release. All expressed concern that others may be arrested on similar charges.
Liu Xiaobo has advocated reforms in China for many years and most recently has helped lead a petition from the Chinese people to the Chinese Government. In 1989, Liu Xiaobo was part of the pro-democracy movement that protested in Tiananmen Square. During this student action, many protesters were killed by government forces, and Liu was among many who were arrested for participation.
Chinese official have not commented on the arrest of Liu. However, the Chinese government has indicated, through its official news agency, that foreign countries should not interfere in Chinese internal dealings.
According the Chinese news agency, the police arrest Liu for subversive activities intended to overthrow the Chinese government. His arrest, in December, came after he signed Charter 08, which called for respect for human rights as well as legal and political reforms in China. Reportedly other writers and intellectuals have also signed the Charter putting them in jeopardy of arrest.
